ENG| Between 2 September and 12 October, St. Julian's School in Carcavelos will host the unprecedented exhibition "Return and Unveiling of an extraordinary Alumni Artist: João Artur da Silva", co-organised by Perve Galeria and Freedom House – Mário Cesariny. It will be the first time in the school's 93-year history that a former student returns to the space through a show of his work. The exhibition, which can be visited Sunday to Friday from 5PM to 7PM by appointment, brings together previously unseen artworks, including recent ones made in 2025, presented for the first time in Portugal, and symbolically coincides with the artist's 97th birthday on 5 October, the Day of the Implantation of the Portuguese Republic. PT| Entre 2 de setembro e 12 de outubro, a St. Julian’s School, em Carcavelos, acolhe a exposição inédita de João Artur da Silva (n. 1928), co-organizada pela Perve Galeria e a Casa da Liberdade – Mário Cesariny. Esta será a primeira vez, em 93 anos de história da prestigiada escola internacional britânica, que um ex-aluno regressa ao espaço através de uma mostra da sua obra. O momento reveste-se de particular simbolismo, pois coincide com a celebração do 97.º aniversário do artista, a 5 de outubro, Dia da Implantação da República.
A exposição, visitável de domingo a sexta-feira das 17h às 19h mediante marcação prévia, reúne um conjunto de obras inéditas, apresentadas pela primeira vez em Portugal, incluindo trabalhos recentes realizados em 2025, como homenagem do artista à escola e às memórias que dela guarda.
Membro mais jovem dos fundadores d’“Os Surrealistas”, junto a nomes como Mário Cesariny, Pedro Oom e Cruzeiro Seixas, João Artur da Silva participou nas exposições coletivas do anti-grupo em 1949 e 1950, mas cedo se afastou do paradigma surrealista ao mudar-se para Inglaterra em 1958. Durante duas décadas, desenvolveu intensa atividade artística e cultural, explorando novas linguagens e conquistando o reconhecimento de figuras da cena britânica, como Henry Moore e Lynn Chadwick. Nos anos 1980 regressou a Portugal, reencontrando antigos companheiros surrealistas, antes de se fixar definitivamente no Canadá em 1991, continuando a criar, mas optando por se afastar do mercado e das exposições. Representado pela Perve Galeria desde o final de 2023, o seu percurso tem vindo a ser revalorizado e resgatado.
Desde então, a obra de João Artur da Silva tem estado em destaque em diversas feiras e exposições internacionais, incluindo a London Art Fair, Art Vancouver, Seattle Art Fair — onde foi destacado no Collectors Lounge — e na primeira retrospetiva em Lisboa, intitulada “Vitalidade Contínua”. Mais recentemente, esteve em foco na ARCOlisboa, a mais importante feira de arte contemporânea nacional.
Em articulação com a mostra na St. Julian’s School, a Perve Galeria inaugura a 11 de setembro, em Alfama, a exposição “João Artur da Silva: Obras recentes e outras histórias”, apresentando até 18 de outubro um conjunto significativo de trabalhos que evidenciam a vitalidade criativa de um autor em constante reinvenção. Entre a escola onde se formou e o espaço que hoje o representa em Lisboa, estas duas exposições assumem-se como um momento de celebração e reconhecimento de um dos mais singulares artistas portugueses do século XX e XXI, cuja obra atravessa o tempo e se renova com integridade, sensibilidade e liberdade criativa.
ENG| Between 2 September and 12 October, St. Julian’s School in Carcavelos hosts the unprecedented exhibition of João Artur da Silva (b. 1928), co-organized by Perve Galeria and Freedom House – Mário Cesariny. This will be the first time, in the 93-year history of the prestigious British international school, that a former student returns to the space through an exhibition of his work. The moment is particularly symbolic as it coincides with the celebration of the artist’s 97th birthday on October 5, the Day of the Implantation of the Portuguese Republic.
The exhibition, Sunday to Friday from 5PM to 7PM by prior appointment, presents a selection of previously unseen works, shown for the first time in Portugal, including recent works created in 2025 as a tribute by the artist to the school and the memories it holds for him.
As the youngest member among the founders of “Os Surrealistas,” alongside figures like Mário Cesariny, Pedro Oom, and Cruzeiro Seixas, João Artur da Silva participated in the collective exhibitions of the anti-group in 1949 and 1950 but soon diverged from the surrealist paradigm when he moved to England in 1958. Over the next two decades, he pursued a prolific artistic and cultural activity, exploring new languages and earning recognition from British art personalities such as Henry Moore and Lynn Chadwick. In the 1980s, he returned to Portugal, reconnecting with former surrealist companions, before settling permanently in Canada in 1991, where he continued to create while stepping away from the market and exhibitions. Represented by Perve Galeria since late 2023, his work has been increasingly reassessed and promoted.
Since then, João Artur da Silva’s work has been featured in major international fairs and exhibitions, including the London Art Fair, Art Vancouver, Seattle Art Fair — highlighted in the Collectors Lounge — and in his first retrospective in Lisbon, “Continual Vitality.” More recently, he was in the spotlight at ARCOlisboa, Portugal’s leading contemporary art fair.
In conjunction with the St. Julian’s School show, Perve Galeria opens on September 11 in Alfama the exhibition “João Artur da Silva: Recent Works and Other Stories,” running until October 18, presenting a significant selection of works that demonstrate the creative vitality of an artist in constant reinvention. Between the school where he trained and the gallery that represents him in Lisbon today, these two exhibitions mark a moment of celebration and recognition of one of the most singular Portuguese artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, whose work transcends time and renews itself with integrity, sensitivity, and creative freedom.
