ENG| Perve Galeria is pleased to announce its presence at ARCOlisboa, in what will be its third participation in one of the most important contemporary art fairs held in Portugal. You can find the gallery at stand M01, between May 30 and June 1, at Cordoaria Nacional, where artworks by João Artur da Silva (b. 1928, Portugal/England/Canada), Reinata Sadimba (b. 1945, Mozambique) and Renée Gagnon (b. 1942, Canada/Portugal) will be presented.

In this 8th edition of ARCOlisboa, which brings together the public, artists and galleries in the Portuguese capital, Perve Galeria is presenting artworks by João Artur da Silva, Reinata Sadimba and Renée Gagnon at stand M01 in the General Program.
Following the success of art fairs in Seattle, Vancouver and London, this is the first time the artwork of João Artur da Silva - the last living founder of the anti-group “Os Surrealistas” - has been shown at a fair in Portugal.
This premiere marks the return of the artist's works to Portugal, the country where the initial phase of his career was born, with the Portuguese Surrealist group of the 1940s, before he moved to London in 1958. Despite the geographical distance, João Artur da Silva continued - and continues to this day, at the age of 96 - to produce in a continuous and multifaceted way, accumulating more than 7 decades of work, crossing different artistic disciplines, from sculpture to painting, photography and drawing.
Along with João Artur da Silva's artwork, Perve Galeria is also presenting artworks by Reinata Sadimba, a Mozambican artist who is a pioneer in figurative terracotta sculpture. Her practice, rooted in Maconde culture, subverts the traditions of her ethnic group, which historically associated figurative sculpture with the male universe. By asserting herself in this environment, Reinata has transformed her art into a powerful gesture of resistance and emancipation. Her irreverent presence in spaces associated with the exclusion of women has elevated her work to international recognition, with her participation in prominent exhibitions such as "The Power of My Hands" (2021 - Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris), in the book "African Artists: From 1882 to Now", published by Phaidon, and her presence in the Tate Modern collection (2023).
Alongside these two unique paths, the gallery is also showing works by Renée Gagnon, a Canadian artist who has lived in Portugal since the 1970s. Her artwork, which combines photography, painting and serigraphy, takes as its starting point a visual investigation into the musseques of Luanda, carried out in the decades immediately after Angola's independence. Through a poetic and critical approach, Gagnon documents social and political transformations, exploring the marks left on the territory and the communities.

Após o sucesso nas feiras de arte em Seattle, Vancouver e Londres, apresenta-se a estreia inédita do trabalho de João Artur da Silva - último fundador vivo do anti-grupo “Os Surrealistas” - no contexto de uma feira em território português.
Esta estreia assinala o retorno das obras do artista a Portugal, país onde nasceu a fase inicial da sua carreira, com o grupo surrealista português dos anos 1940, antes de se mudar para Londres, em 1958. Apesar da distância geográfica, João Artur da Silva manteve - e continua até hoje, aos 96 anos - a produzir, de forma contínua e multifacetada, acumulando mais de 7 décadas de trabalho, atravessando diferentes disciplinas artísticas, desde a escultura, à pintura, à fotografia e ao desenho.
Juntamente com o trabalho de João Artur da Silva, a Perve Galeria apresenta também obras de Reinata Sadimba, artista moçambicana pioneira na escultura figurativa em terracota. A sua prática, enraizada na cultura Maconde, subverte as tradições do seu grupo étnico, que historicamente associava a escultura figurativa ao universo masculino. Ao afirmar-se neste meio, Reinata transformou a sua arte num poderoso gesto de resistência e emancipação. A sua presença irreverente em espaços associados à exclusão da mulher tem elevado a sua obra a um reconhecimento no espaço internacional, participando em exposições de destaque como "The Power of My Hands" (2021 - Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris), no livro "African Artists: From 1882 to Now", editado pela Phaidon, e a sua presença na coleção da Tate Modern (2023).
A par destes dois percursos singulares, a galeria apresenta ainda obras de Renée Gagnon, artista canadiana radicada em Portugal desde os anos 1970. O seu trabalho, que combina fotografia, pintura e serigrafia, tem como ponto de partida uma investigação visual sobre os musseques de Luanda, realizada nas décadas imediatamente após a independência de Angola. Através de uma abordagem poética e crítica, Gagnon documenta transformações sociais e políticas, explorando as marcas deixadas no território e nas comunidades.
