Honoring the legacy of the esteemed Cape Verdean artist Manuel Figueira (1938-2023), who passed away on October 8, 2023, Perve Galeria presents at stand EMB9 of the 2024 edition of 1-54 London an exhibition that places his work in dialogue with two Mozambican masters from different generations: Ernesto Shikhani (1934-2010) and Reinata Sadimba (b. 1945). This exhibition celebrates the diverse artistic legacies that continue to shape the cultural landscape of Portuguese-speaking countries and their diaspora.
In addition to this exhibition, the gallery presents a special project by Manuela Jardim (b. 1949, Guinea-Bissau) at the Upper Embankment Central Arch of Somerset House. Titled "A. Leader, since Ramses II" , this site-specific installation, curated by Carlos Cabral Nunes, blends the artist's African and European heritage to explore historical, social and cultural narratives. The installation fuses hand-painted textiles with sculptural elements, focusing on themes of leadership and community in African cultures. In the center is a sovereign-like figure, surrounded by smaller figures nestled in bowls, symbolizing the nurturing and sustaining role of the people. This work captures the transformative power of cultural identity and the evolving nature of traditions, inviting viewers to engage with the complexities of African society, identity and collective memory.
